Welcome to Logo Adventure!

Posted in Logo Adventure on September 29th, 2005

Well, my progress in the land of programming has gone so well recently that the secret goal I set out for myself just over a week ago was achieved and a fair bit more. So what next for me? Well, firstly I have to sound all self important on a page that nobody reads. Then I plan on making claims about being the best programmer in the world. Finally, I plan on making a retraction of all things written here with some poor attempt at wisdom such as, “I have grown as a person and learnt that perhaps my private life does not belong in a blog”, or perhaps “Writing a blog is like totally uncool now because everyone does it and like, it’s totally stupid and so ghey”.

Anyway, this entry wasn’t about mocking those that write pointless, badly structured and uninteresting posts about their stupid and pointless lives in internet lingo, it is about launching this very new and very exciting section of this very cool and exciting place. In a bit of an effort to get things a little less…plain…here I vow here and now to try and build up a decent professional logo for this and other endeavors. This will ideally include a 2 dimensional outline of the logo and a full 3D render, which unfortunately means learning how to use 3D Studio Max, which really isn’t that hard but I still put it off anyway.

So, hopefully this will be interesting reading, or at least force me to do something about the rather poor presentation of this site. Enjoy, (err…the newer entries on what I’m actually doing that is..)

No I do not like AFL

Posted in Uncategorized on September 25th, 2005

Today, whilst retrieving food from the bowels of the city I was accosted by a fairly drunken lout asking me whether I barracked for West Coast or Sydney. I replied that I didn’t give a flying fuck about watching musclebound men in tight shorts running around after balls and acting like spoilt children when things don’t go their way (in slightly politer terms). Naturally of course this was taken as some sort of insult and was in general not fun. Thankfully, the grand final is over, wonderful news that because now I can finally stop being asked about it all. This entry is going to be the link that I send everyone to when they ask me if I watch AFL or try to engage me in a conversation that in some way involves AFL.

So, here it is here and now, my definitive statement about it all. I don’t care about AFL. I’m not interested in Football. Lots of people aren’t. Please go away and stop fucking asking me. If I have to make a website called idontgiveafuckaboutafl.com just to
prove that I don’t give a fuck about AFL and plenty of other people don’t either, then I will.

Progress achieved

Somewhat of a gloat this post. Since being a bit annoyed at not being very organised I actually have managed to get somewhat organised. With the help of the rather pretty version control system called SubVersioN and an extremely well made client called TortoiseSVN I have done a fair bit on that 8-bit remake as I promised. I’ve read up on heaps and heaps of material related to the many facets of programming, which has been interesting but rather like the Red Queens Race. As well as this, I also got two reviews done for the lovely Old School Gaming site, which is really looking very nice now, so really things are going well. Someday I may even get around to making this site look less bland and having some useful content on it.

Statistical Report Truths!

Posted in Uncategorized on September 19th, 2005

Hello again all you very very bored people who actually read this. Today I thought I’d just quickly point out one of the stupidest reports ever in the history of something or other. Here it is:

Have a good laugh at this

Among the most stupid comments, is this one: excluding murder, Scots were almost three times as likely to be assaulted as Americans.

That’s a bit like saying, “if we exclude all accidents involving cars, then there are no road accidents in Australia”, well done UN on proving yourself a valuable asset to the world. I know next time that I’d far rather be in America, because it’s much less violent, oh..except for the violence that ends in death I guess. Maybe that should be called something else then.

Small Amounts of Faith Restored

Posted in Life Updates on September 9th, 2005

After accidentally purchasing the hideous special edition of Chronicles of Riddick, I saw the original, unmutilated version for far too high a price at Target yesterday. But, for whatever strange reason, I just haven’t seen it cheaper anywhere than about $34. Anyway, being the type to waste money on things impulsively, I bought it.

The good news is the movie is just as good as it was when I saw it in the cinema, I am now much happier, since the special edition really really spoiled the movie for me. The strange thing is that the menus are all identical to that of the special edition. It’s like they’ve just poorly cut in the extra scenes (and boy have they ever cut it in poorly…), probably not even changed the chapter menus and added another disk full of content that no-one would ever watch. Still, I’m happier now, because I can watch it the way it should be.

Again, I encourage people to have a look at this film, since it really has some spark in it. I don’t know why, but it reminds me an awful lot of Dune, except that it didn’t put me to sleep, (although it did have anaesthetic effects on other people who shall remain nameless).

Oh, and for some stupid reason Game Boy Advances still haven’t come down in price, so despite the fact that the PSP is out, (for a pretty hefty price, but worth it in my opinion), the DS costs a mere $50 more than the GBA SP (and has two screens and complete backwards compatibility), it’s still ridiculously overpriced at $150. Stupid world.

Fun Ways To Annoy The Pretentious

Posted in Uncategorized on September 9th, 2005

Hello there, since I’m feeling like actually updating stuff, I thought you might appreciate a few ways to annoy the horrible class of people, those that loudly proclaim themselves to be better than others, either by pretending to know everything about everything, or by claiming to appreciate something which is created or directly related to other pretentious types, (a recursive relationship, you can tell I’m a computer person).

Anyway, you’ve probably met or read things by them, they’re the types who go on and on about how clever subtext is in writing, who go to amateur poetry readings, who review movies and make ludicrous claims about hidden meanings and such. In other words, stupid people trying to act smart. Here’s some fun games to play.

For those movie types
Whenever you meet one of those people who insist they understand the deeper meanings of films and crap on about symbolism and other overrused attempts at shifting what is essentially simple entertainment to a more “artistic” form. And by artistic I mean, selfish and unenjoyable, although this is not strictly true for all films or indeed art.
Anyway, get them to talk on and on about their favourite film(s), get them to lay down their statements and views on as many silly things as you can. Now comes the fun bit, ask them if they’ve watched Starship Troopers, (a movie which misses most people completely), if they think it’s a shallow action piece, let them dig themselves in nice and deep, as many comments as possible. Then explain to them it’s a film about fascism, the rise of brainwashing and how the events before a war are ignored in order to justify which side is “right” and “wrong”. Look it up on the net, see how many reviewers insist it is a shallow action piece with disturbingly fascist ideals? All of these idiots miss the fact that it was exactly the point of the film.
After explaining this, when you bump into the antagonist again, they will almost certainly tell you what an amazing film it is, and so deep on so many levels etc. Recite to them all their arguments and point out that they had to be told this and are therefore a gullible fool.

On the rare occasion that your self proclaimed god actually understands this, the we go to an even better plan, pick a shallow film, the shallower, the better, preferably one of the troma series, and tell them about how so many people miss the deeper implications, the sutble subtexts and metaphorical counterpoint. Get the really into it, then go away. Then, the next time you see them and they tell you how wonderful it is in a public situation, tell them that it’s only a shallow film meant for fun and not for all this ridiculous pseudo-intellect. The next time, go the other way. Rinse. Repeat.

For those Elitist Band Types
Not mentioning any names, but often good bands get bad fans. When you meet one and you get sick of them, tell them you’ve got their newest unreleased work. This of course won’t be believed, but let them speculate, don’t say any more..eventually they won’t be able to stop themselves from asking about it. Suggest in an undertone that it sounds quite different from all their other work, (this will always be met with some sort of approval, since everyone knows, any good band changes style from record to record), let them get more and more enthusiastic, then arrange some sort of listening for them at your own discression. Now comes the fun part, get a standard but not too interesting band, preferably popular and trashy and record it in reverse, speed it up and slow it down if you must and it may take a few tries before you get an unrecognisable sound that seems about right. If you’re lazy, just get several random noise generators going to a standard beat track instead. Anyway, with your ’secret copy’ in tow, let them have a listen.

This is slightly more difficult, your protege will either believe it or not. If they don’t, don’t worry, just tell them to keep listening and that they’ll soon hear why it has to be them. Once they truly believe it and start going on about how awesome it is, just let them dig the hole nice and deep. Record their gushing praise if you must. Now, reveal what it is they were really listening to (by reversing the direction of play) and watch them squirm.

For Those Clever Writing Types
Fairly much the same as the other two types mentioned thus far, this clever clogs crap artist believes that clever hidden meanings (usually painfully obvious to most people, but this breed of simpleton thinks that they are somehow clever for noticing it) and complex language use makes the best form of reading. Others just like to be kept interested, but this wonderous artist reads modern poetry written usually by their similarly stupid friends and talks for ages about how wonderful their own writing is.

The technique is similar to the others, make something completely bullshit, 10 random words in a row if you want, copy a few lines out of the script for an old movie with no clear context, whatever takes your fancy really. Get in there, show them this amazing piece of work (again being sure to document their responses and how you got the original “masterpiece” in the first place, and do your thing. If you’re really cruel you can generate a whole series of these poems/pieces and just show how *versatile* this new author is. Usually people like this don’t really understand what they claim to, so be bold and show them the example to follow, so that they make the rope necessary.

As you can see, the technique remains much the same for all types of buffoon-intellectuals, make a false possible thing, get them to praise it and crush them, or find a really unusual example where most people won’t see the hidden messages and get them to insult it. So go out there and make them feel the way they should feel, idiotic and pretentious!

An Attempt To Get Organised

Posted in Life Updates on September 5th, 2005

Well, for those wondering, the previous entry was inspired by Something Awful being stupid, and aside from suddenly changing their tune and then arguing that they haven’t, they used Paypal and wondered why they got screwed over. Idiots. They have acted so ridiculously that even UK Resistance has taken a fairly nasty shot at them, looks like they pissed off a few people with this rather dramatic backflip.

Anyway, after reading over the backlogs of a programmer type’s Web log, I have decided the only way any of my projects are actually going to get moving is to write about them on here. So without going into details (both to cover myself in the likely and embarrassing event of not actually doing anything and to protect privacy of these things at their early stage) I have started on:

  • A shootem’up for the Acorn (probably trying to squeeze what I can out of a 2Mg A5000, but I may have to increase the minimum memory to 4 or 8 meg, depending on how intensive it gets
  • A simple, but extremely fun sounding database which if done nicely could be a lot of fun for a lot of people.
  • A remake of a cool little 8-bit game (which is going very well, but for some reason I am stuck on).
  • A small Java project which can go in many directions but will probably start out as a character editor for the c64.
  • A very complicated algorithmn in ANSI C designed to solve any starting position of a standard solitaire board (you know, the one with the pegs in a sort of cross thing). This has been mostly written but some of the more complicated search algorithms remain in my mind. I would really like to get this done as an example of optimal code.
  • A lot of reading on vastly different topics relating to both my honours study next year and my own programming abilities

So, having said that, my newest plan of attack (this also comes from a friend) is to deote some time to just one of these projects. For now i will be the 8-bit remake, because in my opinion it deserves the most attention. Hopefully within the next few days I can get some work done and then congratulate myself online. After all this wouldn’t be a real blog without heaping self praise on myself and complaining about how stupid some friend/member of the opposite sex is.

What A Horrible Flood!

Posted in Life Updates on September 4th, 2005

This is terrible! In the land of the free, people are being hurt. This deserves FAR more media attention then say, hundreds of times more people being killed in earthquakes, tsunamis and famine and similar amounts of people being killed in a militant zone caused by an unprovoked ‘war’.

I’m sick of this, I fully admit it. If you are directly affected by this flood, then sorry, but shit happens, get over it. If not, and you’re one of those loud mouthed wanky Americans saying “why is this happening to us?”, you have earned my personal hatred. Things like this happen in the world all the time. Everywhere. The worst thing about this “tragedy” (fairly minor by tragedy scales really, but then when you adjust death figures by correct racial importance, it’s over 100 times more sad than that minor little wave of water that hit all of Indonesia and a significant bit of Thailand and that teensy little earthquake in india that only killed around 12 million people), is that when this is over, the lesson will not be learnt an none of these American Heroes will appreciate when they do horrible things or horrible things happen to another country.

Oh, and of course the amount of money going to charities will be at least 10 times greater than that of the most recent comparable event, namely the Tsunami in south east asia. Because, you know…America really needs all that aid, they have no money to help themselves now do they.

I hate to say it, but it seems that even the most resilient and sensible yanks, even those who generally seem to have their head screwed on the right way round get over sentimental and obsessed with their own country when things like this happen. So if you read this, and you are a stupid yank who has done what I’ve written, think about it. Think about how fucking selfish you are about your own country and how inconsiderate you are towards the fate of others. But both you and I know, all you’ll do is take personal offence to me and probably write something somewhere about what a fuck I must be. Because you know, you’re American, so you’re always fucking right.
